Washington, D.C. – On the evening of Friday, November 5, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the $1 trillion bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, sending it to President Biden’s desk. Today, the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) released the following statement:
AAPD celebrates this historic legislative achievement, which will create much-needed investments in our nation’s infrastructure, promote an equitable economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and make meaningful improvements in many communities that will positively impact the lives of disabled people.
Among its many components, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will invest in long-underfunded accessibility mandates for our nation’s transit systems, work to close the digital divide that impacts many historically underserved communities, and make historic investments in accessible green technology and programs that will reduce the severity of the impact of climate change impact on disabled people.
And, as Congress and the President have acknowledged, the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is only one half of the full picture of America’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Build Back Better Act’s provisions will unlock the full promise of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and also provide much-needed investments in social infrastructure, such as home-and community-based services. We urge Congress to uphold its agreement to swiftly pass the Build Back Better Act upon its return from recess the week of November 15. |
