Washington, D.C. – This afternoon, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed by the Senate to be the next Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court, and the first Black woman Supreme Court Justice.

The true history of the United States Supreme Court has much of the time not been one of equal justice under law. For the vast majority of its history, the makeup and decisions of the Supreme Court have been a vehicle for white supremacy, xenophobia, misogyny, mistreatment of low-income Americans, and ableism. But occasionally, there are moments when  the United States Supreme Court is a source of hope and possibility that the United State of America can be as good as its promise. This is one of those moments.

AAPD is proud to have supported Judge Jackson throughout her nomination and confirmation process. In addition to the historic nature of her confirmation, Judge Jackson is supremely qualified and will bring a much-needed balanced, impartial, and diverse viewpoint to the Supreme Court.

AAPD President and CEO Maria Town said, “Today is a joyful day as we witness Judge Jackson’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court wields significant power to ensure equal justice under law, and it is vital that all those on the bench have a deep commitment to advancing disability and civil rights. With Judge Jackson’s confirmation, we come closer to achieving this goal. Judge Jackson’s record on disability rights gives me hope for the future of disability civil rights cases that may come before the Supreme Court, and hope for the future of our nation.”
